Show your numbers in Parliament, Muhyiddin tells Anwar
Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin today urged Anwar Ibrahim to prove he has the support of the majority in the Dewan Rakyat, hours after the Tambun MP was named as prime minister by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Speaking at a press conference today, he said this would put to rest any doubts about Anwar's eligibility as prime minister.
"Today, the palace issued a statement that Anwar Ibrahim is said to have the support of the majority of MPs to be appointed as prime minister.
"For the sake of the people's confidence and Anwar's legitimacy as prime minister, it would be appropriate for him to prove that he has the support of the majority.
"This should be proven through the process set out by the Dewan Rakyat speaker, that is through the submission of statutory declarations (SDs)," he said at the press conference in Kuala Lumpur.
Muhyiddin was referring to a letter sent by speaker Azhar Harun, asking coalition leaders to submit SDs naming their prime minister of choice.
The letters were to be sent to the palace by 2pm on Nov 21, a deadline later extended by 24 hours.
Anwar, the Pakatan Harapan chairman, was sworn in as prime minister today following a special meeting of the Malay rulers with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.
When asked if PN would bring a motion of no confidence in Parliament, Muhyiddin said the coalition would wait and see.
"Give him a chance," he said. "We were told that there must be SDs."
