France vs Argentina 2022 World Cup final: Olivier Giroud and Raphael Varane may not be among starters of upcoming game
Raphael Varane, who had a successful outing in the FIFA World Cup 2022, might not be in the starting XI in the final against Argentina. According to media reports, Giroud and Varane are suffering not keeping well and missed the final training session on Saturday.
The South American giants will lock horns with the defending champions on Sunday. The game will have Argentina legend Lionel Messi go up against his Paris Saint-Germain colleague Kylian Mbappe for the Golden Boot. However, with four goals in Qatar, Giroud is sitting right below Messi and Mbappe, who have five apiece. Thus, his not featuring in the starting XI would bother France.
Varane reportedly suffered from flu, and Dayot Upamecano, spotted training for the final session, could replace the defender. As for Giroud, who also missed the rain on Saturday, Marcus Thuram could replace him. While coach Didier Deschamps hasn’t confirmed, both players were reportedly excluded from the training session as a precautionary measure.
In the quarterfinal game against England, Giroud surpassed Thierry Henry’s tally of 51 goals for France, becoming the all-time highest scorer for his country. The veteran striker will be looking to be a part of the starting XI, which seems unlikely at the moment, as France is poised to become only the third country to win consecutive world cups, behind Italy and Brazil.
December 18. The game will begin at 3 pm GMT. After a horrible start against Saudi Arabia, Argentina has arguably been the best-performing side, with Lionel Messi at the very core of it. Messi will be looking to realize his biggest dream of lifting a world cup in what is likely his final shot at glory.
